Red Light Therapy FAQ

Red light therapy is a form of photobiomodulation that uses low-level red and/or near-infrared light to stimulate cellular processes and thereby increase cellular energy production. The light is delivered by devices such as LED panels, lamps, or handheld probes that emit wavelengths ranging from 600 to 1200 nanometers.

The light penetrates the skin and reaches the mitochondria, the energy-producing organelles of the cells. There, it activates a protein called cytochrome c oxidase, which increases the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule that fuels cellular activities. Red light therapy also modulates the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are involved in inflammation, oxidative stress, and cell signaling. By increasing ATP and reducing ROS, red light therapy can improve various aspects of health and wellness, such as wound healing, skin rejuvenation, pain relief, muscle recovery, cognitive function and more.

Dose is measured in Joules/cm² (J/cm²), and is a function of the power density (irradiance) at a given distance as well as the time spent using the device.

When it comes to light therapy, dose is important. If the dose is too small, benefits are left on the table. If the dose is too great, the benefits are negated.  This is also known as a biphasic dose response.

Surface Treatments:  For anti-aging and skin treatments like wrinkles, fine lines, acne, and scars the treatment times are relatively quick and a dose between 3J/cm² and 10J/cm² per treatment area is recommended.

For an HG Series panel, treat from a distance of 18” away for about 5 minutes.
For a PRO Series panel, treat from a distance of 18” away for about 2-3 minutes.
For an Ultra Series panel, treat from a distance of 18” away for about 2-3 minutes.
For the Ultra5400 panel, treat from a distance of 18” away for about 2 minutes.

Internal Treatments:  For deep tissue treatments such as pain and inflammation, joint health, muscle soreness, bone healing, thyroid health, and any other ailment under the skin a dose between 10J/cm² and 60J/cm² per treatment area is recommended.

For an HG Series panel, treat from a distance of 6-12” away for about 10-15 minutes.
For a PRO Series panel, treat from a distance of 6-12” away for about 6-10 minutes.
For an Ultra Series panel, treat from a distance of 6-12” away for about 5-10 minutes.
For the Ultra5400 panel, treat from a distance of 6-12” away for about 5-10 minutes.

How Often to do Red Light Therapy?  3-5 treatments per week is great.  You can treat daily, but no more than 2x/day (spaced out to morning and evening).

For our all specialty red light therapy devices please see their respective owner's manuals for dosing instructions.

All electric devices have some degree of electromagnetic field, due to the nature of their power source. The EMF output of our devices comes in at 0.0 µT at 6" (which is our recommended  treatment distance). This means that at 6" and beyond, you are receiving zero EMF exposure when doing a red light therapy treatment with our device.

The reason you only can see half of the LEDs illuminated is because the near infrared LEDs are outside of the visible spectrum of light for the human eye. So, you won't really be able to see the NIR lights when they're turned on. Our HG series of panels feature red and near infrared LEDs in a 1:1 ratio, meaning half of the LEDs are red and half are near infrared. You will not be able to see the near infrared, but rest assured they are on and working.

This also applies to the Hooga Charge, HG24 and HG24 Multi (4-in-1).

No, you should not operate your red light therapy device in a sauna. It is too hot for the components of the panel. We recommend either going in the sauna first, and then doing your red light therapy treatment or visa versa.

Yes, you can. It won't hurt anything, however, red and near infrared light therapy works best on clean, bare skin.

This is just your eyes adjusting. You'll notice that when you first turn the lights on they appear very bright red, but as you do your treatment, your eyes adjust and the light will not appear quite as red. Do not worry. The LEDs are only capable of emitting red at 660 nanometers and near infrared at 850 nanometers.

You can also test this by turning on your device in a dark room and looking at what color you see shining onto the walls.  It should appear red.

The device that's right for you really depends upon your budget and how large of an area you're looking to treat at one time. Truth be told, you can treat everything you need to with our smallest panel, the HG200, by just moving it around to each location for a series of individual treatments. With that being said, if you wanted to be more efficient and treat a larger area of your body in one session, you may stand to benefit from choosing a larger panel.

Also, if you think that in the future you may want to add multiple panels together to create one larger set up, you may be interested in the PRO or ULTRA series as they are modular and mobile stand compatible.

If you are interested in the ability to pulse the red light then you can do that with our new Ultra series. Some research shows that you can benefit from pulsed light because it gives your cells tiny breaks from the continuous stream of light that helps to prevent them from getting too hot. However the early research done on this was using lasers and not LEDs.  LEDs don't heat your cells nearly as much as lasers.  More research is needed on this though.

The majority of our customers do not used pulsed light devices and still get tremendous results.

Red light therapy has been studied extensively and is proven to be effective by thousands of peer-reviewed medical studies and clinical trials. The studies have shown extremely positive results, and an almost total lack of side effects or health risks associated with it. We encourage our customers to do a search on PubMed for peer-reviewed medical studies and clinical trials regarding red and near infrared light therapy.

It is not necessary to wear eye protection as there are many studies that show red light therapy can be very beneficial to the eyes.  However, if your eyes are the least bit uncomfortable, then please use the included goggles.  As your eyes continue to adjust to doing red light therapy you may find that you no longer need to wear them.  Just go by what your body is telling you.

No, there is no UVA or UVB light (the light that can burn your skin) emitted from our devices. You will NOT get a tan.

Our PRO series panels are mobile stand compatible and modular. This means they can be added together and attached to our mobile stand with included mounting brackets to create a custom red light therapy set up. Our PRO series also features dual chip LEDs which are able to deliver more power than the single chip LEDs in the HG series. PRO series is also flicker-free. PRO Series Panel Comparison Chart

You can't go wrong with either series. The HG series is a great entry point to red light therapy, but it just can't be attached to a mobile stand or added to other panels to create a larger set up. The HG series, although less powerful than the PRO, is still an extremely powerful device that delivers high irradiance levels. HG Series Panel Comparison Chart

Our newest series is our ULTRA series.  The Ultra series expands upon the PRO series by the addition of more pulsed frequencies, four wavelengths of light (630nm, 660nm, 810nm and 850nm) in quad-chip LEDs as opposed to two wavelengths in our other series (660nm and 850nm), adjustable brightness and a timer.

Red light and near-infrared light both offer various benefits to the body, but they differ in their penetration depths and the specific effects they have on the body's cells and tissues.

Red light, with a wavelength range of approximately 620-740 nanometers (nm), is readily absorbed by the skin and is effective for treating skin conditions and superficial tissue. Some of the benefits of red light therapy include:

  1. Skin rejuvenation: Red light can stimulate collagen production, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity, resulting in a more youthful appearance.
  2. Wound healing: Red light can accelerate the healing of wounds, burns, and scars by promoting tissue regeneration and reducing inflammation.
  3. Pain relief: Red light has been shown to have an analgesic effect, making it useful for managing pain caused by conditions such as arthritis, muscle strain, and nerve damage.
  4. Hair growth: Red light therapy can stimulate hair growth in people with androgenetic alopecia (male- and female-pattern hair loss) by increasing blood flow to the scalp and promoting the growth of hair follicles.
Near-infrared light, on the other hand, has a wavelength range of about 700-1400 nm and can penetrate deeper into the body. This makes it more effective for treating deeper tissues, such as muscles, bones, and joints. Some of the benefits of near-infrared light therapy include:

  1. Pain relief: Like red light, near-infrared light can help reduce pain and inflammation, making it useful for managing conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, and muscle pain.
  2. Improved circulation: Near-infrared light can increase blood flow and oxygenation to the treated area, which can help speed up the healing process and improve overall tissue health.
  3. Muscle recovery: Near-infrared light therapy can help reduce muscle soreness and improve recovery time after intense exercise or physical activity.
  4. Bone and joint health: Near-infrared light can promote bone growth and improve joint health, making it useful for conditions such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.
In summary, both red light and near-infrared light offer numerous benefits to the body, but they differ in their penetration depths and the specific effects they have on the body's cells and tissues. Red light is more effective for skin-related issues and superficial tissue problems, while near-infrared light is better suited for deeper tissues and internal organs.

We recommend doing at least 3-5 treatments per week. You can treat daily, but no more than 2x/day (spaced out to morning and evening).  In this case we would treat in the morning and evening.

Red light therapy follows what is known as a biphasic dose response.  This refers to the phenomenon where the biological response to red light therapy changes depending on the intensity and duration of the treatment. In other words, there is an optimal range of light intensity and duration that can produce the desired therapeutic effects, while both too little and too much can result in reduced effectiveness.  Nothing bad will happen, however you may leave some benefits on the table by over or under treating.

The biphasic dose response is based on the concept of hormesis, where a low dose of a stressor (in this case, red light) can trigger beneficial adaptive responses, while a high dose can have the opposite effect. In RLT, the biphasic dose response is influenced by factors such as the wavelength of the light, the energy density, and the treatment duration.

To optimize the therapeutic effects of RLT, it is essential to understand the biphasic dose response and to tailor the treatment parameters to the specific needs of the individual and the condition being treated. This may involve adjusting the intensity and duration of the treatment to find the optimal balance between effectiveness and safety.

For skin health, current research recommends a dose between 3-10J/cm2.  For internal treatments (muscles, organs, joints, etc.) current research recommends a dose between 10-50J/cm2.  Please see our other articles on how to calculate dose.

We apologize for the trouble and that the manual isn't more clear! It's a little tricky.

As soon as it powers on and you see the "10" then you should press and hold the power button for 2 seconds and then start hitting the button rapidly as it counts up to 30 and then starts over at 1.  Stop at the desired time and wait until it stops flashing.  At that point pressing the button once will move to the next setting.  You will go through all the other settings in this way until you have them all set.

Here is a brief video demonstrating this:

Let us know if you still have trouble after this!

It's recommended that you use red light therapy on clean, bare skin for optimal effectiveness. Prior to treatment, make sure to remove any lotions, creams, or oils from the area you intend to treat. This allows for the red light to penetrate the skin without any barriers that could potentially reduce its efficacy.

No, the EMF output from red light therapy devices is non-existent at a distance of 6 inches or more. All electronic devices emit some EMF due to the nature of their power source, but the levels rapidly decrease with distance and are not a concern for these types of therapies.

Grounding / EMF
Grounding/Earthing refers to using the earth’s natural energy to improve health and well-being. The earth carries a slightly negative electrical charge. When you come into direct contact with the earth, either by standing barefoot outdoors or using an indoor conductive grounding system, this charge is transferred to your body. In your body, these free electrons work to neutralize the positive charges that can build up in the body over time, thus helping you to realize many health benefits. Emerging scientific research supports the concept that the Earth’s electrons induce multiple physiological changes of clinical significance.

Grounding the human/animal body may have these potential health benefits...

  • Improving Circulation
  • Reducing Inflammation
  • Better Sleep
  • Neutralizing Free Radicals
  • Pain Reduction
  • Protecting the Body from Harmful EMFs
  • Reducing Stress
  • Improving Immunity
  • Reducing Snoring
  • Accelerated Athletic Recovery
Just snap one end of the included grounding cord onto the snap located on your grounding product, then plug the other end into the ground port of a standard electrical outlet. This will allow the slight negative electrical charge from the earth to flow through the cord and into the conductive surface of your product so that you can enjoy the benefits of grounding! You must make direct contact with the conductive surface with your bare skin in order for the it to be effective at grounding your body.
We recommend grounding for at least 30 minutes at a time, but more is better.  Many customers prefer to do their grounding while they are sleeping so that they can spend hours at a time doing uninterrupted grounding.

There are a number of ways to test to see if your grounding product is working. The most important one is the first one. It is a test to make sure the outlet you are plugging into is grounded. If it is, and you plug into it, the mat should be grounded.

1. Test your outlet to ensure it is grounded with a receptacle tester or outlet tester (sold separately). Your product will only work if plugged into a properly grounded outlet. Homes built after 1971 are typically grounded.

2. You can test with a continuity tester.  Plug your tester into a confirmed grounded outlet, and plug your grounding product into a confirmed grounded outlet. Press the tester to the surface of the grounded product, and press and hold the tester button. If it stays illuminated, there is continuity within the circuit and the product is grounded.

3. You can test your grounding cord with a multimeter. Set the meter to “Ohms Ω” and touch the black prong of the multimeter to one end of the grounding cord, and touch the red prong of the multimeter to the other end of the cord. You should see a safety resistance of 91-92K ohms. Some of our cords have a resistance of 102K ohms, so you may see that number as well. If you see these numbers, your cord is working properly.

4. You can also perform a body voltage test with a multimeter. Switch the meter to the AC voltage setting. Ground the black prong of the meter in a grounded outlet. Pinch the red prong in your hand and note your body voltage on the meter. While still pinching the red prong, touch your hand to the grounding product,, while it is plugged in and grounded. You will see your body voltage drop dramatically.

Here is a video demonstrating all of this:

Grounding Sheets/Blankets/Pillow cases/Sleeves/Clothing/Pet Bed:  We recommend machine washing with warm water on a gentle cycle weekly, or at least 2x/month.  Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry.

Do NOT bleach.  Do NOT dry clean. Do NOT use fabric softeners, whitening agents or detergents with oils.

Note: Bleach, lotions and oils can tarnish the silver thread rendering it no longer conductive. Fabric softeners can also build up on the silver and ruin the conductive properties as well. It is advised not to use your sheet/blanket directly after applying lotions to the skin. Please wait at least one hour.

Grounding Mats/Yoga Mats:  Wipe clean with mild soap on a damp cloth. Then take another damp cloth and wipe a few times to remove any remaining soap residue that could otherwise buildup and block conductivity.

Yes, an extension cord can be used to extend the reach of a grounding device from a distant outlet. Additionally, a grounding rod option is available, which can be connected directly to the earth outside, bypassing the need for a grounded outlet altogether.

It's not necessary to unplug grounding products when not in use. Unplugging them will not extend their lifespan because there is no electrical current flowing through the cord; it is only providing grounding continuity.

Feeling a tingling sensation or small 'pricks' when first using grounding products like a blanket is fairly common and typically lessens after a few grounding sessions. This sensation can be your body adjusting to the grounding. If concerns persist, contact customer service for further support.

Ideally you would want to be grounded 24/7, so there is no limit to how long you can ground.  Sleeping gives you the largest amount of time to ground uninterrupted, so that's what we recommend.  Otherwise we recommend at least a 30 minute session each day.

Yes, you can, however thick socks and/or socks made from synthetic materials may take a lot longer to start becoming conductive.

Feet naturally sweat and will moisten the socks enough to make them conductive.  Thinner socks and socks made from natural fibers such as bamboo and cotton work best in allowing the Earth's energy to conduct into the body.

Yes, so long as they are thin and made of a natural fiber such as cotton or bamboo.

Direct skin contact is always best, however your body naturally perspires at night which moistens your pajamas enough to allow the electrons to flow through your grounding sheets (mat, pillow case, etc.) and into your body.
